Unlike other similar systems, as you can see in the images accompanying a patent, it includes a display, while the list of editable and stackable components are the battery, processor, video card, memory, drives storage, speakers and wireless module. There are also a component for the recognition of gesture and a unit of holographic projection that probably is designed to work with Microsoft HoloLens.
From this information it seems that Microsoft is thinking of a system that the user can modulate the basis of Microsoft services who is interested in accessing. The project that the Microsoft patent reminiscent of Google's Project Ara, a modular smartphone whose components can be changed according to a particular need of the moment.
"In this way, the device can be modified by the user in an intuitive way without requiring a detailed knowledge of the hardware," wrote the authors of the patent. Of course the existence of the patent does not automatically confirm that Microsoft is working on another project. However, it seems clear that some of its engineers are considering the solutions in this direction.
Razer had presented a very similar project at CES 2014 in the case of Project Christine who, however, two years after the announcement is not yet available for purchase. Revo Build M1-601 is another example: this Acer modular system, however, did not show the video solution that seems rather integrated into the Microsoft concept. The latter, finally, it recently took a experiment in modular, and we refer in this case the Xbox One Elite Controller product cn SCUF Gaming collaboration.
