Samsung has already explored the field of Virtual Reality with Gear VR viewers, but he did it by choosing a low-cost solution, designed to live in symbiosis with the smartphone, unlike the premium represented by the proposed products Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
Samsung, however, could draw a furrow important than the Gear VR so far produced with the VR viewer next generation which has confirmed to be working: it will be standalone, will integrate the necessary hardware to make the positional tracking user - as Oculus and lives - and will use a wireless connection to communicate with the hardware, as mentioned, will not necessarily be represented by a smartphone Galaxy (it could be theoretically even a PC).
As reported it is not the result of a mere rumor spread in the network, but it has been confirmed by Injong Rhee, head of Samsung's research and development division, at the Samsung Developer Conference, which got underway in recent hours in San Francisco.
We are working on VR dedicated and wireless devices, not necessarily working with our smartphones.
Eliminate the constraint of cables could be an important difference from viewers like HTC Vive. Samsung will also consider other features to integrate into next-generation VR viewer, such as technologies for tracking and hand gesture. It is also in this case of a significant difference compared to existing hardware VR that uses external controller to allow interaction between the user and the virtual environment.
The outlook is certainly promising, but Samsung does not want to create expectations that could be disappointed in the short term. To integrate all the functionality described in a VR viewer Samsung and other companies will need to wait a few more years. Rhee says about it:
Virtual Reality is amazing, but the sector is still in its infancy
The Samsung executive shares the view that 2016 will be the year determined to kick off to the virtual reality market, but, at least for the moment, the Korean company will continue to explore with the Gear VR offer. As mentioned in other occasions, the low-cost solutions for smartphones will have a key role to clear the VR devices by offering the opportunity to the public to try them without excessive outlay of money.
