Video games sales in April 2016: Dark Souls III in first place

Sales for 509.5 million dollars in respect of the video game industry as a whole in April 2016. This is what emerges from the latest NPD report about the gaming market in North America. Corresponds to a decline of 15% (598.1 million) compared to April 2015, diluted in both hardware and software segments. The only sector to remain in growth is that of accessories, which includes the so-called toy-to-life and which has recently seen the resignation of Disney Infinity.

As for the hardware, sales amounted to 142.1 million dollars (-23% compared to 2015), for the software 203.9 million (-21%) and accessories to 157.6 million (+ 4%).

"The new software has sold less in April 2016 than in April 2015 to two factors: last year there have been more competitive releases and this year there have been fewer sales in April also for the March release," said Liam Callahan, an analyst at NPD. "In particular, it was Mortal Kombat X to make a difference: this game has sold more of all new releases in April 2016 and with a margin of 18%".

For the hardware, however, it affects much the price reduction is that the PS4 Xbox One: 19% of the decline was in fact attributable to lower revenues permitted by the two next-generation consoles. But it is not red alert for gaming consoles, still says NPD, since the total sales of the PS4 and Xbox One 30 months since the launch outsell PS3 and Xbox 360 in the same time interval of 40%.

At the same time we must consider how to NPD takes into account a portion of the market: firstly, it refers only to the US, considering the digital sector and the second hand market.

Dark Souls III turns out to be the best-selling video game in April 2016, followed by Ratchet & Clank and MLB 16: The Show. The Fourth Division, then Grand Theft Auto V, Minecraft, Quantum Break, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, NBA 2K16 and Star Fox: Zero.

Also due to the decline in console sales, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have not released official communications on the sidelines of the NPD data.

Max Q: Anomalous

Hello and welcome back to Max Q! Last week wasn’t the most successful for spaceflight missions. We’ll get into that a bit more below. In this issue: First up, a botched launch from Virgin Orbit… …followed by one from ABL Space Systems News from Rocket Lab, World View and more Virgin Orbit’s botched launch highlights shaky financial future After Virgin Orbit’s launch failure last Monday, during which the mission experienced an  “anomaly” that prevented the rocket from reaching orbit, I went back over the company’s financials — and things aren’t looking good. For Virgin Orbit, this year has likely been completely turned on its head. The company was aiming for three launches this year, but everything will remain grounded until the cause of the anomaly has been identified and resolved. It’s unclear how long that will take, but likely at least three months. Add this delay to Virgin’s dwindling cash reserves and you have a foundation that’s suddenly much shakier than before. ...
