Facebook is creating a map of the density of population extremely detailed

The Facebook Connectivity Lab is using the latest image recognition software to create maps of the density of the population much more accurate than the previous generation of maps. This is accomplished through the intersection of the existing neural network data built on data from the popular social network with the satellite images that return information about the distribution of the buildings on the territory.

The new map of the population can boast a margin of error of up to 10 meters. The experiment is part of the so-called Eagle project, an aircraft able to surf at high altitude for several weeks and transporting the internet connection in less accessible areas. Have a detailed view on the distribution of the population, in fact, it helps Facebook in order to provide connectivity via drones solar energy.

Facebook is conducting studies along with Columbia University and these data will be made public later this year. Businesses, government agencies, scientists and curious will be able to inquire about the exact location where people live really.

They were fathomed 20 countries, including India, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and other African nations, and about 21.6 million square kilometers. The whole is based on the analysis of billions of satellite images which required several weeks of processing to be completed. According to Facebook, the new studies show a certain logic in the distribution of the population in rural areas, which will lead to an allocation of a smaller number of drones compared to preliminary reports.
