Ultrabook and discrete GPU: Razer Core from April to $ 500, GPU excluded | Rumor

The news has not yet considered official, but the clues to this effect abound: Razer Core, the special external box with discrete GPU designed to increase the graphics power of portable, could be commercialized from the month of April at a price equal to $ 500, GPU excluded. The figure would drop to $ 400 in case of purchase made simultaneously to the ultrabook Razer Blade Stealth.

Razer non ha ancora confermato la notizia, ma le informazioni appena riportate sono state fornite dal sito Venture Beat che sembra aver pubblicato in anticipo il contenuto del comunicato stampa con un articolo successivamente rimosso, ma di cui resta traccia nella cache di Google (ved. QUI). L'articolo riporta le dichiarazioni di Kevin Sather, Global Director of product marketing di Razer, che pone particolare enfasi sulla soluzione proposta per potenziare il comparto GPU degli ultrabook. Si tratta, infatti, del primo box per GPU esterna realmente plug-and-play. 

Anche un importante competitor come AlienWare ha predisposto una soluzione simile con il suo "Amplificatore di scheda grafica" che però presenta due svantaggi rispetto al Razer Core: non è di tipo plug-and-play ed utilizza un connettore proprietario. Razer Core, al contrario, si connette al portatile tramite porta Thunderbolt 3 che assicura una velocità di trasferimento dei dati sino a 40 Gbps e può essere collegato con la macchina accesa e scollegato senza necessità di spegnerla.

Razer Core, come emerso in precedenza, è sostanzialmente un box che ospita un alimentatore da 500W, la GPU discreta - supportate soluzioni di AMD e Nvidia - un connettore Thunderbolt 3 e 4 porte USB. AMD, pochi giorni fa ha fornito ulteriori dettagli sulle schede supportate e su Xconnect, la tecnologia che rende possibile collegare e scollegare il box con il PC acceso.
