Microsoft allows game developers to Xbox One accommodate within the game server also PC users and, possibly, those of PS4, Sony of course if it can. This is yet another important change to Microsoft's gaming strategy, revolutionized in recent weeks from the announcement of the PC version of Quantum Break.
Microsoft has indeed revealed that independent developers can enable the feature of cross-network play within their games. At first it will be a revolt feature players Xbox One and PC, but later will be extended to the world PS4, Sony if it wanted to. As they know the players, traditionally Microsoft and Sony have always maintained their platforms very closed online services. Rocket League, the hybrid soccer / racing very successful last year, will be one of the first titles to support the new feature. Microsoft refers to the Windows 10 version of Rocket League that manages the multiplayer via Xbox Live.
"We are happy to confirm that Rocket League of Psyonix will be one of the first games to take advantage of the new feature of cross-network play between players Xbox One and PC, with an invitation to other networks to participate if they so choose", it reads in a blog post written by Chris Charla, global director of ID @ Xbox.
Many have read it just as an explicit reference to Sony and PS4, but Charla apparently also turn to other PC networks like Steam and other non-Microsoft universe. Of course, we must also consider that at this time Sony is the console market leader, so if Microsoft can have an interest in capturing the basin of Sony users, you can not say the same thing with roles reversed. On the other hand it is equally true that in the past Sony has enabled this same feature in certain securities, given that the PS4 players of the same Rocket League can challenge those playing on PC.
It is not the first time that the Cross-network play is enabled for the PC and Xbox platforms: as early as 2007, in fact, PC gamers and Xbox 360 could compete in Shadowrun. And the same was true, Fable Legends, unfortunately deleted in the last few days.
