Qualcomm has just announced a new LTE modem able to "run" at the speed of 1Gbps for download. Qualcomm Snapdragon X16 LTE is designed on a production process to 14nm FinFET and is the first commercial product compatible with the LTE standard Category 16. The higher speeds are possible because of the support of four channels from 20MHz Carrier Aggregation of FDD spectrum is that TDD . The maximum upload speed is instead of 150Mbps thanks to the CA 2x20MHz.
The new modem is the result of using a new architecture scalable proprietary Qualcomm that allows the use of modular components. In this way the company can afford to use a single technology in different fields between them, starting with the ultra-fast broadband connections right up to the Internet of Things devices more efficient. The new "X16" standard modem supports the Licensed Assisted Access and is the first modem LTE Advanced Pro among those in the trade.
Snapdragon X16 LTE is designed to reach speeds in the order of Gigabit using the same amplitude spectrum of LTE devices Cat. 9. Using of CA technologies and 4x4 MIMO antennas, the modem can receive 10 flows only data carrier by using only 3 20MHz. Using 256-QAM modulation can also increase the peak rate of flow of about 75Mbps to 100Mbps, with further gains that could be granted because of data compression technologies and support to LAA and LTE-U.
The modem is of course backwards compatible with older connectivity technologies but still very popular worldwide and is mated to WTR5975 transceiver, designed on the modem needs to simplify PCB layout and minimize the energy requirements of the solution. Qualcomm has released the first sample to third-party manufacturers, with the arrival in the commercial channels for the public which is expected by the second half of 2016.
