At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Mediatek announced the new system-on-chip MediaTek Helio P20, an energy-saving processor which adds to the high MediaTek Helio range family of mobile processors. Mediatek promises freedom of design to device manufacturers due to the significant opportunity in terms of battery life, combined with the performance and to different types of premium features.
MediaTek Helio P20 boasts a higher energy efficiency by 25% compared to the previous generation Helio P10, adopted by a large number of manufacturers and able to compete with more famous Qualcomm solutions.
The P20 chipset is produced using 16nm process technology and is the first SoC to support the RAM (random access memory), DDR (Double Data Rate) low LPDDR4X consumption. In terms of performance improvements, the SoC has increased the capacity of the CPU and GPU through its architecture True Octa-Core clocked up to 2.3GHz that takes full advantage of the core ARM Cortex A53. The new Mali T880 graphics unit, the GPU higher level currently proposed by ARM, is clocked at 900 MHz.
Also, Helio P20 is equipped with the latest technology MediaTek modem that supports LTE WorldMode Cat.6 and carrier aggregation 2x20 at speeds of 300 / 50Mbps. The SoC integrates Dual-SIM Dual Standby function globally, while in the regions where the GSM network is no longer available, the SoC is put simultaneously on the WCDMA network standby. Helio P20 also supports multimedia broadcast and multicast service allowing LTE mobile devices to receive HD video content over LTE.
The LPDDR4X memory allows to reach 70% of bandwidth more than the LPDDR3 memories, while ensuring 50% of electrical consumption in less and lowering the supply voltage to 0.6V. The Soc is also equipped with the Image Signal Processor (ISP) MediaTek Imagiq built on the design of the previous model MediaTek Helio X20. This 12bit processor boasts the support of Bayer and Mono sensors, ensuring the acquisition of three times the light signal compared to conventional Bayer Bayer + sensors. The dual phase detection autofocus system also allows the auto focus in real time four times faster than traditional autofocus systems. No shortage of temporal multi-scale denoising technologies that allow you to produce videos and photos more accurately with less noise, even in low light conditions.
