Bill Campbell died at age 75 after a long fight against cancer. It was called "The Coach" in the technological for his great ability to dispense advice and warnings to many of the industry leaders. Among them we can mention names such as Steve Jobs, Larry Page and Jeff Bezos, guru and best-known leaders of the company Apple, Google and Amazon respectively.
The news of his death has flocked in recent hours and announced by some of the technological leaders. The family also issued a statement: "Bill Campbell has died peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with cancer. The family appreciates all the love and support, but for now asks to respect privacy." It is a great loss to the Silicon Valley, for a man who was contacted for its entrepreneurial wisdom, not for technical skills.
Over the past few years he has helped Google and Apple also simultaneously: "Steve would say to me shouting:" If you help them make me hurt, ' "Campbell declared in an interview in 2014 for Fortune. "But I would have replied:" I do not know to program in HTML. I'm just instructing them to manage their company in a way more effective. "Longtime friend of Steve Jobs, Campbell had reached the Apple by John Sculley as Vice President of Marketing.
After some disagreements with Sculley founded Go Corporation, a company later sold to AT & T. Campbell then became the CEO of Intuit, and in 1997, when Steve Jobs returned to the helm of Apple, has joined the board of directors. And there he stayed for 17 years, until his resignation came in July of 2014. Campbell has spent large part of his career with Apple, experiencing all its periods of transition and supporting the new CEO Tim Cook.
In the same interview to Fortune said: "Apple is an institution now. Tim has done an excellent job in the formation of a strong organization. There are many young, strong people who are taking over. The company is set to grow even ". For his career he was also mentioned in the book The Hard Thing About Hard Things Ben Horowitz, and John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins called him a key figure in his recent change of role in society.
In the past, Campbell has also coached the football team at Columbia University, a role for which he was nicknamed, among many reasons, "The Coach". Bill Campbell leaves his wife Eileen Bocci Campbell and two sons, Jim and Margaret.
