The consumer audience does not need to 96 TB of data on your computer, nor can actively exploit a top speed of 2.600MB / s for data storage subsystem. However there are some applications where these characteristics are absolutely well you like. About processes huge moles of media files, such as RAW video content to 4K resolutions and upcoming 5K or 6K, can appreciate certain numbers; and these users will appeal with the new LaCie 12big.
LaCie enters into one product transfer speed and storage capacity, thanks to a RAID 5 configuration to a maximum of 12 drives 7200RPM. With an area occupied on the plan similar to that of a tablet (like the LaCie describes), the new unit offers 50% more capacity than other storage solutions for the desktop market. It comes to a maximum of 96 Terabytes as regards space, able to reach speeds of 2.600MB / s in RAID 5 configurations.
The system is connected via Thunderbolt 3 but is compatible with Type-C USB 3.1 devices and Type-A with the included adapter. Inside we find Seagate enterprise drives with 256MB cache, guaranteed for five years after purchase. The units are designed to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week non-stop, with a maximum of 8760 hours of operations continued during the year. In comparison consumer discs are designed for 8 hours and 5 days per week.
With activity up to 96TB of capacity, 12big can store about 100 hours of 4K proress 444XQ content (764GB per hour) in RAID 5. Each disc is accompanied by several status LEDs that allow you to keep an eye on the hard and his health state. The all-aluminum structure acts as a large heat sink, the air is recirculated which is secured by a temperature-controlled fan system that removes hot air from the disks.
If a fan stops working the product still it remains operational in all its entirety, giving the user time to replace the damaged part without stopping its operations. 12big will be available from this summer in denominations of 48, 72 and 96TB, with a price that has not yet been made public.
